Migrating your UMD email to Gmail
« on: June 02, 2011, 01:41:04 am »
UMD disables your mailbox sometime after six months of leaving the school, so it's a good idea to create a backup well before then.

Luckily, although your mailbox is disabled, you can still receive emails to your @umd.edu email address.  Follow the steps below:

1.  Set up mail forwarding from your UMD account to your Gmail account

2.  Enable IMAP from within your Gmail account
(See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77695)

3.  Migrate your UMD mail using MoveMyMail
Click here to start the transfer wizard.
  • For Step 1, enter your full UMD email address.
  • For Step 2, enter your full Gmail address.
  • For Step 3, select the folders you would like to transfer (the default is usually a good starting point).
Type a folder name to put your email in (this will be a Gmail label); the default is your @umd.edu email address.  Click Finish.  Your transfer will be queued and you will receive an email with a summary of your transfer.

4.  While your transfer is being processed, update your UMD contact information.  Once your mailbox is disabled, UMD needs to know where to send emails destined to your @umd.edu address.  Update your profile information here:
http://www.testudo.umd.edu/apps/saddr/

5.  When an email is sent to your @umd.edu address, it will forward to your Gmail account.  In order for it to go into the same Gmail label created with MoveMyMail, you need to create a filter.  Enter "@umd.edu" in the To: field and click Next Step.  Check "Apply the label" and
select the label that was created by MoveMyMail.
